News from Antigua and Barbuda

With one beach for every day of the year, Antigua and Barbuda has been blessed with an abundance of natural beauty, a fascinating history, a rich culture, and warm and friendly people. Bounded by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and located in the "Heart of the Caribbean", the twin-island nation offers visitors a wealth of activities - from swimming with stingrays up to discovering the rainforest on zip lines.

Antigua's newest attraction is the Subcat Adventure (
www.subcatantigua.com) that gives you the opportunity to watch the colourful underwater world without getting wet. A submarine dives to the offshore Cades Reef, accompanied by a diver who presents all surrounding plants and animals.

Antigua events related to the most popular water sport in Antigua are the annual Classic Yacht Regatta (15.-20.04.2010) and the following Antigua Sailing Week (24.-30.04.2010), one of the most popular regattas in the sailing world. This year there is a new sponsor of the event with the Bavarian jeweller Leinfelder.

Another highlight of the annual events is the Carnival in Antigua and Barbuda, when the inhabitants celebrate in summer the emancipation from slavery in 1843. During that week the island comes alive like no other time of the year. A range of music from Calypso to Soca and steel band pulses through the streets of the capital St. John's during the course of celebration.

During the 175th anniversary of that historical date Baldwin Spencer, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, decided to honour another important incident - the election of Barack Obama as the first African-American US President - by renaming Antigua's highest point in Mount Obama. Therefore on 4th August 2009, Obama's birthday, there was a ceremony for the official renaming of that hill, up to now known as Boggy Peak. As the majority of the population is originally African origin the new name is meant as a symbol for triumph, hope and dignity.

Island accommodations range from comprehensive resort facilities and luxury hotels to smaller more intimate boutique guesthouses and cottages.

In December there were two openings of ne hotels in Antigua:
Sugar Ridge, a four star hotel, located on a hill at the west coast offers in all of the 60 rooms a breathtaking view of the white sandy beaches and the clear turquoise sea (

In the south east of the island you find the new luxury resort Nonsuch Bay Resort with 62 apartments and 18 villas on a secluded beach with excellent conditions for sailing or kayaking (

Exclusive accommodation is once again available at the new designed, in December reopened Jumby Bay, A Rosewood Resort, a six star hotel located on Long Island, a private islands in front of Antigua. Besides 28 new and 12 renovated suites the resort offers 22 villas which are spread over the island (
